Tankless Water Heaters - More Efficient Use of Energy
By Scott Harker
People who are looking for Alternative Energy Sources expect two things to
happen in the future: The world will rely on sustainable energy sources and our machines will require less energy
to run them.
Everyone has heard of Hybrid Cars which utilize two means (usually electricity and gasoline) to power the vehicle and
are more fuel efficient, but have you heard of Tankless Water Heaters?
Today's water heater has a tank that continuously holds a set amount of water, typically 40-50 gallons. To ensure that
you have hot water when you need it, the water heater is constantly heating and reheating the water
in its tank. The water heater does not care if you are home or not, it maintains the water in its tanks at
the set temperature all the time. This is very inefficient. Would you run your car all day
and all night if you were not driving it?
Tankless hot water heaters, also sometimes called 'demand' water heaters, are an alternative method of obtaining
hot water when you need it. This is a new technology for many people, but amazingly this technology has
been around for a long time. The products have been produced and improved for several years resulting in
the most efficient and cost effective way to heat water. Outside of North America, water heaters that use a tank
are considered to be "dinosaurs."
The Advantages of the Tankless Water Heater
- Saves Money - Lower Monthly Energy Bill. You are probably paying $50.00 or more per month just to MAINTAIN heat in a tank
type water heater! WHY? Because the tank loses its heat up the flue ( average is about 6 degrees an hour)
and then reheats, even while you sleep or are at work. This is called STANDBY HEAT LOSS. The Tankless
Water Heater only runs when you are using hot water.
- No Shortages of Hot Water. Like most families, you probably use a lot of hot water mostly in the mornings
and then again in the evenings. Do you frequently
run out of hot water in the middle of a shower? Or maybe the water is just tepid towards the end of your
shower and your rush through it... A tankless water heating system can overcome the shortages of hot water common
with tank water heaters. The tankless water heater never runs out of hot water. Some models can keep
up with two showers going at the same time INDEFINITELY.
- Greater Efficiency When Running. When the water heater is actually used to heat the water,
the tank type water heaters are 40% to 60% energy efficient (the rest of the energy is spent to
heat the exhaust and walls of the tank!), while tankless water heaters are 80% (gas) to 99% (electric)
efficient. When you are not using hot water, you can save up to 15%-20% of your energy bill with the
tankless water heaters, because tank type water heaters are subject to standby heat loss.
- Great Flexibilty. Generally a tankless water heater is smaller than a conventional water heater which
means it will fit into spaces that a heater filled with water cannot. Some of the tankless water heaters
can be vented horizontally and others can be vented vertically into an existing chimney.
Tankless water heaters offer more flexibility in terms of possible applications and save space.
They can fit will in boats, mobile homes and RV's, and can be used with radiant heating systems.
- Durable, Latest Technology. The expected life of the tankless water heaters is 20 years.
Many consumers have used their tankless water heaters for over 20 years and they are
still using them because tankless water heaters are serviceable.
Advanced tankless water heaters have computer-monitored safety devices and automatic water and gas
valves.
- Environmentally Smart. In a world of increasing energy costs changing the way water is heated is just
common sense. Not only does the consumer save money in energy costs, with the tankless water heater, but less energybueng used means less energy being
generation and equals less pollution being created.
A couple of Notes of Caution: Gas-powered tankless water heaters use more air for ignition so
they must be well vented and have an adequate air supply. Make sure that the tankless water heater is
properly installed and ventilated. With
electric powered units, be sure your electrical systems meets the amps and voltage requirement for the particular
model of tankless water heater you are interested in.
Tankless water heaters have been in use for years. Consider one the next time you need to replace your water heater.
