The Earth's Climate is Changing Everywhere -
"Will There Be Positive Effects from Global Warming?"

Possible Short-Term Benefits of Global Warming

It is certain that if there is enough of a rise in average World temeparature, the effects of global warming will be harmful, if not devastating, to human beings.  If the temperatures get hot enough, causing the sea levels to rise to a critcal point:  Coastal cities could be destroyed, leading to an end to the economic and social life as we know it today.  Yet, there may be some short-term benefits of global warming, prior to reaching the danger zone.

Health benefits - Most people prefer to live in a warm climate as compared to a cold one.  Not only are warm climates generally more pleasant, there are some health benefits as well.  People who suffer from conditions worsened by the cold, such as rheumatoid arthritis, often move to warmer climates in the winter months (snowbirds).  A small amount of global warming could allow such people to stay in their homes and extend the range of benefits from warmer temperatures to higher latitudes.

One recent and extensive study of statistics was carried out about the health benefits of warmer weather.  Scientists studied the numbers of deaths, in different months of the year, in places that get cold in the winter and warm in the summer.  It was determined that many more people die in the winter than in the summer.  This tends to support the benefits of global warming.

It should be noted, though, that the statistics in this part of the study did noit cover all of the variables.  There are other considerations during season changes that would not occur in global warming.  For example, days are shorter in winter, but they would not be shorter if more global warming occurred.  The longer amount of darkness could be a factir ub wubter deaths. c0ntri

More Food - In 2004, it was observed by lobster fishermen that the warmer temperatures caused by global warming had affected their harvest.  There appeared to be an abundance of Maine lobsters living and thriving in the warmer waters.  The fisherman were both surprised and happy for the increase, but expected it to be short-lived. The optimal temperature range for lobsters is probably very small.

For a few years global warming maybe increasing the amount of corn, wheat, barley, and other grains that are being grown.  Warmer weather will increase the growing seasons for many areas. And the additional carbon dioxide exposure may increase productivity as well.

There is some evidence of this happening. Wheat yields in China have increased over the last two years. And may trees and other plants are flowering earlier in the the year in the Northern hemisphere.

Again these are expected to be only short term benefits of global warming. Current projections suggest that farmers will only be able to keep up with demand for crops for a few more decades.  Then world-wide shortages are predictd with widespread famines. Countries that have not witnessed food shortages in recent history may find themselves facing untold hunger problems.

As tmeperatures rise, there will be shift in where crops can be grown. AgriculturAldouspi endeavors in tropical zones are expected to decline rapidly as the temperature becomes too hot to support crops.  The temperate zones will be able to have better farming, and more of the world's food plants will be grown there.

Some economists believe that global warming will be a boon to international trade.  They foresee that the loss of ice sheets in the Arctic will open up shorter trade routes that have not been accessible in the past.  This should provide faster travel between Europe, America, and Asia.

Short term gains in prosperity due to global warming may occur over the next few years for some populations. At the same time, tides are rising, hurricanes are appearing more frequently And wildfires are more fierce. Will people see only the good aspects of higher temparatures and ignore the current and future dangers? And is there an optimum world temparature that future generations can inmpose in the world climate? There is no doubt that whatever the future holds, good and bad, wise adaptations in how we produce and use energy today, can impact on how good or how bad the next 50 years will be.
