The Earth's Climate is Changing Everywhere - "Can Trees Make a Difference?
Forests And Global Warming
The world is connected by so many small things.
The way land is used in one area can have an affect on global
warming everywhere. The kinds of plants, animals, or minerals that exist on one plot of land
render it different from other areas of land. These unique differences
must be understood to help one gain a better insight into global warming...
Forests are a valuable resource of the land in most
countries. Trees are useful for many reasons, but when it comes to global
warming, it is a plantlife's ability to scrub carbon dioxide from
the air that makes them so important.
And trees, especially old growth trees, are the best carbon dioxide
scrubbers to be found in nature. Trees use carbon
dioxide in photosynthesis, taking the CO2 from the atmosphere, releasing back the oxygen and storing the
remaining carbon
within their cells. Beyond being a habitat for a variety of species, this is another reason why
old growth trees should be protected from the axeman's blade.
Typically, the lumber trade argues that the old growth
trees can be easily replaced by new trees. But they are not equivalent.
New trees do not possess the same capacity that old trees have of preventing global
warming by trapping carbon dioxide.
Of course, different species of trees do a better job
of absorbing carbon dioxide than others. So some proponents of cutting suggest that certain new
trees be planted to replace the old growth trees. But there is no guarantee that a different
species will survive as well as the original tree species in a particualr area.
Nor is there any guarantee that any trees will be planted, at all, after the old ones are cut down.
An important weapon in mankind's arsenal to slow and eventually prevent global warming
Is maitaining the current old growth forests. There is just no getting around the fact
that trees with many decades of growth are better able to help us prevent
global warming.

New laws maybe need to stop or, at least, slow down logging and road
building in ancient forests to prevent global warming. Forests are home to a variety of species and
provide great opportunities for unspoiled recreation and hunting. A prudent society can balance its need for
cut lumber with the need to mitigate disasterous climate changes
Many acres of trees can be cut down in a week, that will take generations to replace.
Several studies have been done to estimate the
amount of potential global warming being caused by the deforestation of tropical
rainforests. Loggers, in the tropical belts of our planet are not just taking
out mature trees for lumber.
People who want to cleang huge swatches of forest at one time. They do so by clearcutting and even burning
large portions of the rainforest. There is a great pressure to find a place for people to live, work, and
farm in the Areas cleared of jungle. Alternatives may need to be found for these people. And better ways
To clear forests land should be put into practice. Such methods that allow narrow bands of forest to connect
with large jungle areas should be looked into.
Deforestation carries with it many global warming problems.
Not only are mature trees destroyed that trap CO2, but other greenhouse gases
are increased by deforestation. These include methane and nitrous
oxide.

While most studies about climate changes and
global warming indicate that prevention should focus on the green house emissions caused by
the burning of fossil fuels first. It is clear that the rapid of deforestation taking place in Afica,
Asia and South America come a close second as a cause for global warming.
People can change their dependence on old growth trees
for lumber. There are many different building materials available to be
used. It does not upset the balance of nature when you build a home with stone,
for example. Bamboo, which grows quickly in many different environments, can be used to make
furniture and
other building material. Hemp can be used to make paper. Used sugar cane stalks can be used to
make charcoal. A species as clever a humanity can find many ways and products that can replace
the use of trees and forests and still maintain a high quality of life. Our forests are important
in stopping global warming, and need to be protected and expanded. We can
help with this situation by refusing to use lumber that comes from old growth forests
and the rainforest and demanding alternatives instead.
